by Andrew B
US / Africa Energy Ministers Conference
source: Village Power 2000

Tucson, AZ •• Dec. 15, 1999 •• SolarQuest® iNet News Service •• The Corporate Council on Africa has a vision rooted in a belief that Africa’s economic future and success is dependent on the ability of Africa’s entrepreneurs and business people to make and retain wealth through partnerships with America’s private enterprise sector. This vision is made evident in the council’s presence at the US Africa Energy Minister’s Conference. With over fifty African Energy Ministers in attendance, the council couldn’t think of a better event in which its members would like to be represented. The council has a diverse portfolio of corporations and individuals that include: Ambassador Andrew Young, Ambassador David C. Miller, Jr., General Motors Corporation, Chevron Corporation, BP Amoco, Exxon Exploration Company, Texaco, Shell, The Coca-Cola Company, Caterpillar Inc., Phillips Petroleum Company, etc. The council was established as a non-partisan, non-profit, non-governmental, and tax exempt organization of corporations and individuals dedicated to strengthening and facilitating relationships between African and American individuals and organizations by creating educational, cultural, and commercial exchange opportunities.

According to Gregory Saunders, who is director of policy and services for the organization, the role of the council in this conference is seeking to reach out to small companies wanting to do business in Africa. At the request of the DOE, CCA planned a number roundtable and panel discussions pertaining to doing business in Africa. Among the topics being discussed were “Opportunities and Experiences for Small and Medium Businesses in Africa, Financing Options for Small/Medium Businesses, and “Case Study-Conducting Negotiations for Small/Medium Businesses. “The Department of Energy has succeeded in bringing together at one place, at one time, and under one roof over 50 ministers of energy. This hasn’t been done by any other country in the world at any other time in history.”

The Vice Chairman of the Board for Corporate Council on Africa, hosted a roundtable entitled, “Doing Business in Africa for Small and Medium Businesses.” The council sponsors and hosts a number of programs and activities.

The African Visitors Program works in close contact with the US Department of State and African embassies to arrange private meetings between visiting African officials and council members. Other programs include the Meetings program and the Trade and Investment Programs, both of which are designed to bring the council’s members and African officials to the negotiations table. The programs are also designed to introduce the members of the council to commercial opportunities in Africa. Perspectives is a publication that is designed keep its members informed about important issues concerning trade and investment climate in Africa.
